In Taiwan, it’s primary cause is betel nut chewing. Oral mucosal changes and sensitivity may also be caused by frequent consumption of chili or vitamin B deficiency. The accumulation of large amount of collagen in submucosal layer causes vascular stenosis, thinned epidermis and reduced mucosal protection, which cause weakening of surface protection and risk tissue carcinogen exposure that may induce malignant changes.
